Even though people clearly have different preferences when it comes to music, very little is known about how those preferences are based. A model of musical preferences based on listeners' affective responses to music from a wide range of musical genres is presented here. Three separate studies came to the same conclusion: music preferences have a latent five-factor structure that is independent of genre and primarily reflects emotional/affective responses to music. These factors have been interpreted and labeled as follows:

1) a mellow factor that includes styles that are easy and relaxing

2) an urban element that is largely characterized by music with a lot of rhythm and percussion, like rap, funk, and acid jazz

3) a sophisticated element that includes jazz, world music, opera, and classical music

4) an Intense factor characterized by energetic, forceful, and loud music;
