Answer :

Greenblatt speculates that Shakespeare wanted to spend time with his daughter Susanna. His will was carefully written to benefit her above all others.

Why would Shakespeare retire at such a young age ?

  • After 1611, Shakespeare moved to Stratford and retired. Shakespeare rewrote and dated his will on March 25, 1616. He pretended to have turned 52 on April 23, the day of his death. He was laid to rest at Holy Trinity Church in Stratford on April 25.
  • At the age of 47, Shakespeare retired to Stratford, where his wife and family had remained for the entire time he had lived and worked in London.
  • He had a bank of plays that saw their first performances soon after before departing London. The Winter's Tale, Macbeth, The Tempest, and Cymbeline made up a very strong lineup.
  • Shakespeare's retirement also included taking a more active position in family concerns and taking pleasure in visits from his numerous friends in the theatre, arts, and literature.
