Total number of acorns hid  =  number of acorns hid per tree * number of trees    

Let   T be the number of trees chipmunk used

For chipmunk:    = 3*T

For squirrel:   = 4*(T-4)

 As both the animals hid same number of acorns.

    3T = 4(T-4)      

    3T = 4T - 16      

      16 = T

Therefore the chipmunk hid 16 * 3 = 48 acorns

and the squirrel hid 4(16-4) = 48 acorns.
