But that which was most sadd and lamentable was, that in 2 or 3 moneths time halfe of their company dyed, espetialy in Jan: and February, being the depth of winter, and wanting houses and other comforts: being infected with the scurvie and other diseases, which this long voiage and their inacomodate condition had brought upon them; so as ther dyed some times 2 or 3 of a day . . . ; that of 100 and odd persons, scarce 50 remained. And of these in the time of most distres, ther was but 6 or 7 sound persons, who, to their great comendations be it spoken, spared no pains, night nor day, but with abundance of toil and hazard of their owne health, fetched them woode, made their beads, washed their lothsome cloaths, cloathed and uncloathed them . . . all this willingly and cheerfully, without any grudging in the least, strewing herin their true love unto their friends and bretheren.

In the beginning people were upset and were talking negatively amongst themselves but they soon gained patience and calmed down. Unfortuantely, half of the group had died in 2 to 3 months due to the winter weather and multiple diseases. With a couple people dying every day, what was once over 100 people turned into only 50. Despite these tragedies, there were several people who's health was perfectly fine. These people showed their devotion to their people by generously caring for them and taking care of all their needs.
