Independence granted to Angola from Portugal: 1975
• Two major independence movements began to battle cach other for supremacy in
Angola
Power struggle between two former liberation movements, the People's Movement
for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and the National Union for the Total
Independence of Angola (UNITA).
MPLA identified itself as "Marxist-Leninst," while UNITA identified itself as
"democratic" as both looked for international Allies
