The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad opened as 13 miles of track in 1830. Horses were used to pull carriages on wheels. Using the track, one horse could pull the same load on the tracks that would take up to 10 horses to pull off the track.

Is the first highway, authorized by Congress in 1806, that was built entirely with federal funds. The construction of the road began in Cumberland Maryland in 1811. It closely followed the military road that was cut through the wilderness by George Washington and General Braddock in 1754-55. It ended in Vandalia, Illinois in the 1830s.
