The Chinese were angry at all the foreigners and missionaries who had taken over their country, so they formed groups to oppose them. One famous
group was the "Boxers". The United States and the European nations joined forces, and crushed the Boxers. The United States' involvement in China
gained the country the respect of other powerful nations.
